I was needing to know where is the thermostat located in a 1995 Nissan 240SX SE 4cyl, Rear wheel drive, automatic transmission? I have already purchased the new thermostat but do not know where to install the new at. The indicator everytime I begin to drive after about 10 minutes it goes from bottom of the gauge cold to top of the gauge hot, almost breaking the needle it seems. Then after kicking over in the gears it slowly begins to float back down to the hot mark only. And goes back up and down over the course of a 30 minute drive. Please let me know the next step. Thanks.

Hi omallie,

Did you check the coolant level in the radiator?

I am not sure where the thermostat is but it should be at the lower radiator hose joint at engine.

Thank you for the quick response back. No, as a matter of fact I have not checked the coolant level, I am not very engine savy. Waht would I have to have or require in order to do as you suggest? I was not sure if I needed some type of special tool. And do you have a current figure diagram of the location of the lower hose location you suggested for where the thermostat location may be? Please help any advice or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely and greatfully,
Brad Nash

Hi Brad Nash,

Open the radiator cap when engine is cold and check if the coolant level is at the top of the neck. Is the reserve tank. That is the basics you need to check first instead of replacing the thermostat.

To do any repairs, we must try to determine what is the cause before proceeding, not replace then only ask why it is not working.

The radiator has two radiator hoses, one on top and the other and the lower end. Lower end is the lower hose, check where it ends at the engine, if you see a rounded portion where the hose ends, the thermostat shoild be under it.
