1995 Nissan 240SX Temperature gauge

A few minutes after I start my car, the temp nedle rises all the way up as if the engine is over heating. There's no smoking. Then it suddenly goes down to normal, but keeps doing the same periodically as I drive. What could be the issue?

Sounds like your thermostat is sticking.
