Ran perfectly until after a 100 mile freeway trip. Coming off freeway after trip car died at first stop sign. Will die now at idle, very rough at idle must keep engine rev'ed up. Heavy smoke and gas smell at idle. Black soot on ground after a minute of idle.

Runs fine at all speeds above idle.

It is running too rich (too much fuel and not enough air) Check for blockages at intake. Also, has the check engine light come on? Does the engine have its normal power other than the idle problem? You may also need to check the fuel pressure. The regulator may be bad. Have you checked for vacuum leaks? Also, make sure the EGR isn't plugged.
Let me know what you find.
