The vehicle listed above is a 4-door, original owner. Spent five months getting rid of rust on frame and drive line, replace leaking fuel lines, tank, pump good now. Went further with front end upper arms, all ball joints and new hubs. All back together engine good running now. I shifted the transmission into gear and up and down the driveway six times, then nothing? Just stopped, engine still runs fine but will not move. You can feel the engine reduce slightly when you shift manually p, r, n, 3, 2, 1, (putting it back in park, it grinds) but shifting with buttons on dash 2, 4hi, 4lo does nothing. Now I am at a loss. Help?

Hi,

If it is grinding when you place it in park, recheck the axles you removed. One isn't fully engaged. A way to confirm this is to place the vehicle in park and see if it still moves as though it's in neutral. Also, make sure nothing happened with the driveshaft as well.

Let me know what you find.

Take care,

Joe

Joe F, thank you for your reply. Transmission in park and does not move as it was in neutral. I made sure the c clamps were in before pin and locking bolt in when axles put back. As much as I tried not to make more problems, somehow, I did. They put too many sensors on this thing, but nothing comes up for drive line stuff.

Hi,

If you are hearing grinding when placing it in park, that tells me the internals (output shaft) is turning in the transmission and the parking paw is grinding it to a stop. It would be the same as placing the transmission in park while the vehicle is moving.

Could you record the sound it makes and upload it for me to hear?

Let me know.

Joe

Joe F,

It seems it will be when he gets to it (I didn't know that!) So, he's got so many projects at the shop (money ones) and well you and I just got to be patient. When someone is doing you a favor, you just can't push it. So, you will be the first I get back to. Can't wait myself. Frank

Joe,

It looks like a rare occurrence with one tooth of a spider gear broken off/failed and damaged the other. So much that they weren't meshing with axle gears! I guess I really messed up. I have taken axles out before, Olds and other Chevrolets, doing this on my back with jack stands. Well, at 78 I just can't do anything right anymore. It stinks getting old. Frank

Hi,

Frank, thanks for the update. I'm sorry to hear what happened. Listen, at 58, I'm the same way anymore. At least it feels that way. LOL However, if you only installed the axle, I'm not confident that is what caused a spider gear to fail.

Do you plan to replace the spiders yourself? Let me know. If you do, I'll get you as much info as I can to help.

Let me know and don't blame yourself. If it broke that easily, it was ready to break regardless of what you did.

Let me know.

Take care of yourself and stay in touch.

Joe, this site is very good, and people can share their problems with others. I checked around for gears and Original GM can't find. My friend will get after market and do it. He ordered and should get tomorrow. Even though I had 6ton jack stands (harbor freight) w/locked pins for safety.I work safe oriented. You get older and become Bionic, hearing aids, bad eyes, everything hurts. Aahh to be in your 20's again! He's going to alignment too. Want him to double check anyway. One good thing, I can still drive good! Frank

Hi,

20's? I totally agree. Those days are behind us, but we still have a lot of good ones ahead of us.

If possible, let me know how things turn out for you.

Take care,
