Shut off then check engine light turned on

So my friends car completely shut off after start and the check engine light came on before it shut off. Will it be wise to give her a jump? It has a new battery.

That should be fine but what I would do first if possible is scan for codes. Knowing what codes are there will let us know what the possible issues are. This may not be a drained battery but some other issue so a jump start may not make a difference. However, adding that jump to it, is not going to hurt anything.
