Is the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel pump in the gas tank?

The fuel pressure regulator is at the top of the fuel pump combined with fuel filter mounted in fuel pump module in fuel tank. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

it backfires. More so at higher speeds. Someone suggested fuel pressure regulator. Where is it and what does it look like

The regulator on this vehicle located on the pump in the tank. I included the info on this for your review.

However, before you condemn this, I would suggest testing the pressure using this guide.

1993 dakota 3.9 wont start. I put gas in throttle body it runs till you quit fueling it. New fuel regulator fuel pump. It ran until I put new fuel filter on. I have checked the filter its on right. I have fuel to the regulator at the end of the line. It dont seem to be getting pass the regulator. I removed the rails & injectors, cleaned all of it checked for clog. Replaced it all, starts with fuel being put in.I NEED HELP

Use a gage and check fuel pressure. The pressure regulator is on the return side. Restricts fuel flow till proper pressure is reached. 39 psi. From the pressure regulator, the fuel should go to the tank. If fuel pressure is ok, check for injector pulse. Any applicable mil codes? You can check those yourself.

Backfire when mashing accelerator in park. After engine runs for five minutes I shut off, then restart and engine will shut off.

The regulator is located on the end of the fuel rail and held on via a snap ring. I'll post some pictures below.

It sounds like you may have low fuel pressure. With the key on and engine not running you should have 31psi. With the engine running and vacuum line to regulator plugged it should be 39psi minimum at idle.

WARNING: The fuel system is under constant pressure, even when the engine is OFF. Always release fuel pressure before servicing any fuel system component.

REMOVAL

1. Release fuel system pressure.
2. Disconnect negative battery cable, and remove air cleaner assembly.
3. Disconnect vacuum hose from throttle body.
4. Using snap ring pliers, remove snap ring and pressure regulator.
5. Remove O-rings from regulator.

INSTALLATION

1. Install new O-rings on regulator.
2. Push regulator into fuel rail, with vacuum nipple pointed straight up.
3. Install snap ring.
4. Connect vacuum hose to regulator.
5. Connect negative battery cable, start engine and check for leaks.
6. Install air cleaner assembly.

Thank you. But will low fuel pressure cause it to backfire? I always thought that was from a too rich mixture.

I have seen low pressure cause backfiring. I would check pressure with a gauge. Most parts stores have them in their loan a tool program.

I did a fuel pressure test on my Dakota as you suggested, and it registered a fluctuating pressure. It started at around 12-13 PSI then went to 20-25 PSI in a few seconds before the engine stalled. My manual says possibly the fuel regulator. What do you think?

Hi:
With the vacuum removed from the regulator, your pump should produce around 39PSI with the vacuum attached to the regulator, it should be 31PSI. Check it with the regulator disconnected. If it doesn't produce close to 39PSI, the pump is bad. If you plan to replace it yourself, the easiest way is to just take the 8 bolts holding the bed to the frame out and lift off the bed. Removing the tank can be a pain and will take much longer and potentially lead to other problems (broken straps, cracked plastic tank.)

How I you test the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel injectors to make sure that they don't won't before I spend a lot of money on new ones. Also where would my ASD relay be located at, I've been told where but they're two relays there and they neither are labeled by anything, so which one would it be.

When distributor signal is not present while cranking ASD relay turns off power to electric fuel pump ,injectors and coil. Here is how you test the regulator and pressure.
