No compression in one cylinder

Driving down highway I heard a noise in the engine for a few seconds then it was gone. Fifteen minutes later the battery light came on and the car shut down with major smoke coming out. When the smoke settled I looked under the hood and my belt snapped and came off. The garage I had it towed to said there is no compression in one cylinder and the engine needs to be replaced. Is there no alternative for repairing this problem.

You will have to do a full re-build as the rings have collapsed with the heat, and bearings may have been over heated also. Pistons can also be affected. Cost wise, a change over engine is often the quickest and cheapest option to re-building yours.
