Hi,

If the starter isn't engaging, first see if placing the transmission in neutral makes a difference. If it doesn't and there is no noise when you try starting it, we need to check a few things.

IF you look below, I attached the wiring schematic for the starting circuit. Note, this is for a 1.8L. No 1.4L was offered and it's for an automatic transmission. If that is incorrect, you need to let me know.

To get started, take a look through this link. It explains the most common reasons for a starter issue and how to test.

Next, I need you to check fuse 20 in the interior fuse panel under the dash on the left side. When checking the fuse, even if it appears good, confirm there is power to and from it. Here is a link to help:

Next, if the fuse is good and has power, we need to confirm the PNP relay hasn't failed. The relay is in the relay box. If there is another relay with the same part number, switch them to see if it makes a difference. If there isn't one, here is a link that explains how to test a relay:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-an-electrical-relay-and-wiring-control-circuit

If the relay is good, then we next need to check the fusible link C in the under-hood fuse/relay box. When checking, confirm there is power to and from it.

Let me know what you find. Also, the last two pics show fuse orientation in both fuse boxes.

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.

Joe
