My xterra sometimes makes a loud rattleing noise

When I'm driving my car makes a loud rattling noise when I am driving up a hill or when I hit the gas to accelerate after going around 40 miles an hour. It just doesn't seem to have the power it once had

It could be several things. You could have clogged fuel injectors causing improper combustion. A worn out timing belt or a worn out camshaft or crankshaft position indicator. The latter is more likely.
