Hi and thank you for helping,

We’re a one vehicle RV family that just moved from Pa to Az. Had injectors, Hpop, IPR, CPS, etc, done in Pa. Truck got us here. Yay! But now. Hoping the truck isn't toast.

1.5 months ago, I started noticing more exhaust smell. Entering the cabin while sitting with a/c on. Smelled like fuel.

Truck running okay. Calculated fuel milage around this time, ok.

2 weeks ago, started to see significant exhaust smoke. Light color, I think. Truck running ok still. I just happened to check my oil and find its way higher than the dipstick mark. (Normally about 3 gal oil, I later pulled an extra gallon out). Not milky. Seems like diesel fuel intrusion to me.

Fuel bowl clear. Fuel filter nice paper color. Clean.

Coolant clear. Later pulled 4 gal out. Did not see fuel or oil.

Was advised (forums) that it could be injector O-rings. I bought 8 O-ring kits and changed. Thought I would find a damaged O-ring. All looked good to the eye.

Then the forum says, oh, sometimes injectors fail inside, and they don’t fully turn off. Take injectors to the shop for a test.

I wanted to get compression numbers so decided to try that now. First step, turn over starter to blow out cylinders through glow plug holes. PFFFT! Coolant flies out of #5 glow plug hole. Pull injector and I see water dripping from the brass cup into the cylinder hole. (I'm wondering if the cups are very weak, and did it just now crack due to injector work? Do I have another original problem?)

(Brass cups a known issue on the 7.3L around 300,000 miles)

Thats when I drained the radiator. I can now key cycle the starter and I see the glow plug holes huff n puff just like in videos. They kind of blew mist and then it got clear air. But #5 and 7 seem to have always mist. Put paper towel over glow plug holes and it is not water (seems diesel to me). Compression on #5/7 is way high, like oil is in there. 5/7 are like 480/515psi (higher than new truck).

The idea that coolant sprayed from cylinder 5 indicates a head gasket issue. As far as the oil level is concerned, does it have a diesel smell? That is crazy if it was a gallon over full.

Next, if the oil is overfilled, that can cause the compression to increase if it is extremely over full.

You mentioned a mist continuing to come from 5 and 7. If you remove the fuel pump fuse, does that stop?

Let me know.

Hi Joe, thank you.

Cylinder #5 has a brass cup crack and I'm wondering if it just now happened as coolant seems totally clear.

I changed the oil and to me it seemed like diesel was infiltrating

I can try to pull the fuse and re-crank, but even as is, it's only #5 n7 that are still spraying. The other six cylinders are just blowing air out the glow plug holes. Does that indicate anything?

Also cylinders 5 and 7 have very high compression as if there's oil down there sealing the rings up.

Hi,

If the oil is at the correct level, what I'm going to suggest is to take a borescope into those two cylinders to see if anything is out of the ordinary. Something isn't making sense.

Also, when you crank the vehicle, can you hear excessive drag on the starter when those cylinders reach top dead center?

Cranking seems smooth all the way through the cycle to my ears.
I did stick my cheap eBay borescope in one of the holes, but it didn’t make good images. I should buy a better one.
But the truck ran/started okay before all this.

I swapped injectors 5/7 with 2/4.

It took a day but eventually they all were blowing air. It didn’t follow the injectors and it didn’t stay at the cylinders.

But I think this says, it's not something down in the cylinder.

Also, since they are clear, the 5/7 compression has come down to normal levels.

Anyway. I guess it's all pointing to the injectors. I found a shop that can do testing at $40 each. I'm going to box them up and get them dropped off.

Hi,

I agree with your thoughts. The problem does appear to be related to the injectors. If you can, let me know what you find when they test them for you. I'm interested in knowing.

Take care,

Joe

He randomly numbered these injectors.
He says #2 drips and #7 just shoots a stream.
Says the issues are internal. (See above pic)

He thought the o-rings I purchased were not good quality. Then I told him they were Motorcraft. He was surprised.

Can anyone explain the three columns of numbers?

Hi,

It sounds like faulty injectors. Did he recommend replacing them? Also, is there a picture that didn't upload?

Let me know.
