When I am stopped at a light I have to push fairly hard on the gas to move the car, it usually gets to 2000 RPMs before it starts to move, I was just wondering what the problem is and if it is a costly fix?

High engine speed suggests the transmission is slipping. That could be as simple as low fluid due to a leak, but regardless of the cause, that slippage is going to overheat and destroy the clutch plates very quickly. Forcing the car to move is going to turn this into an expensive transmission rebuild. More than likely the damage has already been done, but there are still other internal parts that can be damaged, which will add to the cost of the rebuild.
