When I press the brake pedal my front brakes make a sound quite similar to an airplane landing, and feels as if the pads are grinding. I am afraid it might start a fire. I need to get back and forth to work but cannot get them done until Monday.

There are a lot of variables that make this question impossible to answer. How far do you drive to work? One mile? Fifty miles? How much of that is stop and go driving and how much is on the highway where you do not use the brakes? If this was a Ford product, they use softer metal for their rotors to make them quieter under normal braking, but that means by the time you hear the grinding, a lot of damage has already been done. GM rotors are harder so you will hear the noise right away, but the wear should have been caught some time ago with regular inspections.

Since these rotors are relatively hard, you may get away with driving the vehicle for a few days, but expect to need at least one new rotor in addition to the regular brake job. To make vehicles lighter, rotors do not have a lot of thickness beyond the published legal minimum thickness. If a rotor will end up below that minimum after the machining is done to true it up, it has to be replaced. Fortunately, they are not as expensive as they were twenty years ago.
