my defroster won't defrost the windows

I put on my defrost button to clear the windows and after 30 minutes the windows are not clear can you help me

Is there heat blowing on the windshield? Is the system set to fresh air and NOT recirculate? Is there any chance that the heater core is leaking and steam is getting on the glass? Is there a slimy film over the glass?
