The first thing that needs to be done is determine what is causing the problem with your car. Is the check engine light on ? If so that means a diagnostic fault code is stored in your cars computer. We need to retrieve that information. Here is a tutorial what is involved for checking diagnostic codes:

If you don't have access to a code reader or scanner most auto parts stores have tool loaner programs and can rent you one. Auto parts stores like AutoZone can check codes for free.
