I am hearing a whirring noise and smelling gas when I try and start it.

Hello,
This could be a problem with your vehicle's Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP). Your vehicle's Power-train Control Module (PCM) uses the signal from the CKP to determine engine rotation for rpm's and misfire monitor. If it isn't getting a signal from the CKP then it won't know that the engine is cranking.
