Hello, no it doesn't necessarily mean you need a new engine. Do you really only have 24,200 miles on it? Thats pretty low for a 2012 year vehicle. I assume if that is correct you do not drive it much at all. Do you live in the country where you might have a mice or rodent problem? I only ask because a vehicle that is not driven much is susceptible to rodent damage. They love to make nests in vehicles that are not driven much, and they love to chew on wires. A Catalytic Converter will fail for a few different reasons, but they all come down to there being unburned or partially burned fuel going down the exhaust. A rich running condition, where there is too much fuel. This can happen because of misfiring cylinders, sensors that are sending incorrect data to the engine computer and it is enriching the air fuel mixture by accident, or some fueling issues.
Is the car running rough? or have any starting issues or high idle?
It is very rare for a vehicle with such low mileage to need a Converter unless there is something else going on, and if the problem that caused the Converter to fail in the first place is not corrected the new one will fail very fast too. And they are not an inexpensive part.
You're getting it worked on somewhere I assume? I'm sure there are codes stored in the engine's computer that will give some indication as to what is happening for it to fail. I would have the shop give you any information before they replace it, we can help you get a better idea of why it failed so prematurely.
