Vehicle overheated. Full hot gauge. Drove approximately 1/2 mile while hot. While driving hot, gauge went full cold? Discovered bad water pump. Replaced water pump, thermostat, clutch, clutch fan, and radiator cap. Repair went well and once started again it ran gauge cool right below middle as always, except when at higher speeds tends to run gauge middle to 3/4? Didn't do before. Also motor is very sluggish especially going into second gear, but overall also. The motor also has a tick tick tick to it that it didn't have before?

Hello,

Okay, Usually when you hear a tick, tick, tick it is the hydraulic lifters or the valves that are not getting oiled properly. I would recommend checking your vehicle's engine oil level on it's dipstick. Also is your vehicle putting out any white smoke out the exhaust? The danger when a vehicle overheats is the aluminum cylinder heads have a much lower melting point than the iron engine block does. When the vehicle overheats the aluminum cylinder heads may warp and it's this warpage that will cause head gasket failure. The best way to test if you have a blown head gasket is to do a head gasket test or a compression test. Here are links on how to do each one below:

Please go through these guides and get back to us with what you find out. We can go from there.

Thanks,
Alex

Hello Alex,
Thank you for your information and answer.
I do not see any sign of blown head gasket. No white smoke out of tail pipe. No moisture or fluid in oil. Looks good and clean. (I had a oil change done after repair also).I'm sure without some of these tests you mentioned you probably don't know for sure.

Hello again,

That sounds good to me. I would just make sure your engine oil is at the level it should be because you could damage camshafts and valves otherwise. Please get back to us with what your able to find out.

Thanks,
Alex

I will keep an eye on oil level for sure.
If not a blown head gasket are there any other answers possible to my problems that may have been caused by overheating?
Also, do you have any idea why gauge went to cold when I was driving the vehicle hot?

Hello again,

Usually that is what happens to a vehicle when they overheat. If you got away without happening to your vehicle, consider yourself lucky. I've always been a big fan of Dodge and Mopar. I love horsepower. It sounds like they had a good day at the factory when they made yours. They ECT or the wiring sounds like it might have shorted out. In the diagrams down below I have included the wiring diagrams of your vehicle's ECT sensor, connector with callout, and testing of the ECT. Please go through these guides and get back to us with what you find out.

Thanks,
Alex
