The Heat and cool air work on all speeds. The air blows best out the front vents and not so well on the feet. I switch the mode to defrost and you hear it shifting over, but never gets there and then blows hard out the front vents. I don't hear clicking like many people hear when the mode actuator is bad. Please help. I need the defrost before winter. Thanks!

Hello,

There is a gear and lever set up that when something get put down the vents like a ink pen or stick it will break these parts. Here are diagrams to help you see what I am talking about and how to fix the problem. Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

Thank you for the help! Is it on the driver side or passenger side? So you are saying it could be the mode actuator or a different gear up there from the diagrams you sent?

Yes, it looks like it is on the drivers side. The actuator moves the gears and levers you need to make sure they all work when you move the climate control.

If something is caught in there, changing the damaged gear will only let it break again.

Can you please shoot a quick video with your phone so we can see what's going on? That would be great. You can upload it here with your response. Here are the other blend door actuators and gears so you can see how the system works. Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what you find.

Hello, I have the same problem with my car. Ken, could you please help me find out where you get these documents? I'm having some problems trying to find out where that is in my car. I've had this problem for a full year now and I really don't want to spend $1,200.00 in labor to get this fixed. Also my air just stopped working. We checked to see if it was the blower motor and we put a negative positive wire into the blower motor and it spun. Do you think it is the resistor?

Is your car the same make and model? Asking to avoid any problems. You say it "stopped working" In which way? The mode selector doesn't work (IE you select vent but it stays on the floor or defrost?) Or that you can change the blower speed but still get no actual airflow? Two different issues with different testing and solutions. The power test to the blower would hint at the lack of airflow being in the blower control module, it isn't a resistor like older vehicles but a module that uses Pulse Width Modulation to control the blower motor speed by pulsing the power to it on and off faster or slower depending on the selected speed. However if it's the air direction as a problem then much of that is covered above. The information above is from Alldata. A subscription based online information center. They do have a DIY version (as does Mitchell1) with much of the same information we use and both run about $20.00 to get that information for a single vehicle for a year.

I have the same car but mine's a 2.0L Turbo 3LT as for not working, I just got my blower working again so regard that issue, as for the defrosters when clicking the defrost button you can hear the gears turn just no air out of the defrosters but everywhere else works when clicked on defroster mode air comes out of front top vents.

Please check out the first response it shows where the defroster blend door actuator is and the gears that go with it. Can you please shoot a quick video with your phone so we can see what's going on? That would be great. You can upload it here with your response.

As Ken said the gears and the cam on the defrost doors are a common issue. They are made of plastic and only take a bit of flexing to damage. Next is the shaft that moves the door itself. Sometimes you can snake an inspection camera in there and see if it's the shaft or the door itself.
