In most 2000 Mitsubishi models, the tensioner for the serpentine belt is located near the front of the engine, typically on the side of the engine block where the accessories are driven (e.G, alternator, A/C compressor, power steering pump). It's a spring-loaded pulley designed to apply tension to the serpentine belt, keeping it properly tensioned on all the accessory pulleys.

To locate the tensioner, follow these steps:

Find the Belt Routing Diagram: Open the hood and look for a sticker or decal with the serpentine belt routing diagram. It's usually located on the upper radiator support, the underside of the hood, or in the engine compartment near the front.

Identify the Tensioner Pulley: The tensioner pulley is often smaller than the other pulleys and has a smooth surface (no grooves for the belt). It will be mounted on an arm that allows it to move to apply or release tension on the belt.

Release Tension on the Belt: Use a wrench or a socket and breaker bar to rotate the tensioner pulley in the direction that relieves tension on the belt. This will allow you to remove the old belt or install a new one.

Remove and Replace the Belt: With the tension released, carefully slide the old belt off the pulleys. Then, route the new belt following the belt routing diagram. Make sure the belt is seated properly on all the pulleys, including the tensioner pulley.

Apply Tension to the Belt: Use the wrench or socket and breaker bar to rotate the tensioner pulley in the opposite direction to apply tension to the new belt. The belt should be snug and not have excessive slack.

Inspect the Belt Tension: After applying tension, double-check the belt alignment on all pulleys and make sure it's sitting correctly. The belt should have the right amount of tension, neither too loose nor too tight.

It's essential to have the correct size and type of serpentine belt for your specific Mitsubishi model. Refer to the vehicle's service manual or consult with an auto parts store to get the right belt for your vehicle.
