2000 Other Mitsubishi Models Car Overheating

The car overheats sometimes when driving and i was told it was the head gasket. would this be right because something would have had to melt or damage the gasket in the first place. would it be the temp gauge valve is malfunctioning.

Cheap fix try replacing the thermostat and make sure your coolant level is correct and ensure that the cooling fan for the radiator is coming On. Don't work come on back.
