My '01 Montero has an almost metal on metal sound coming fromt the belt area. There are no performance issues. The noise does go up and down with the engine speed when the throttle is pressed. It just started. Do I have a pulley going out, alternator, or water pump? Whats going on? Please help.

The noise does not seem to be coming form the alternator, but it was so noisy on the pulley above and below the alternator. The pulley below was wiggling a bit, and when the motor is off it is the only pulley that has any play in it. I don't know what that pulley is for though. The motor sounds like a diesel, but again, no performance issues. Looking at the motor from the front of the car, on the left you have a pulley up top, I think it is the water pump, then to the left and lower is the alternator, and then almost level but to the right is another pulley. This is the one that is moving a little bit and the one I think is making the noise. Is it ok to drive it like this? Do you have any ideas? Thanks for your response and help.

That is the tensioner pully and if movement then bearing faulty. Would not drive too much before repair. You do have three belts right?

Not hard at all but you sure there is only one belt. Is this a 3.5L V6?

Replaced the tensioner pulley last night and al symptoms are gone. That was our culprit. It was a fairly easy job and I got it done in about 30 minutes. The old pulley was practically seized up. Thanks for all of your help.
