My daughters Montero is making a fairly loud tapping sound, much like lifter noise. I understand that the s.u.v. has a single overhead cam so no need for lifters but an exploded picture I viewed looked like it had some type of lifter system. How best to solve the loud tapping noise.

You need to check the oil pressure-could be the oil pump is weak and the oil is not making it all the way to the head/s. When was the last oil/filter changed? This valvetrain is non adjustable you need to change the the hydraulic valve adjuster-meaning lifters/shimming discs.

Might want to try engine flush and see what happens.
