my a/t battery and brake light stay on and the car dies.

Hi there,
Check the alternator charge rate, you may have a faulty alternator.

Hi there,
A basic test is just set the meter on 20V scale, and attach to battery with car running, you want around 14V as a benchmark charging voltage.

Hi there,
If the voltage is to low the alternator is not working and you are just reading battery voltage, if a lot higher the alternator is working but with a faulty voltage regulator, this is part of that internals of the alternator
