When I hit the gas in my 2006 Galant (4cyl) it makes a very bad rattling sound. It sounds almost like a tin can is being dragged down the street. It used to only be when you accelorated slowly but the sound has now progressed to when it's idleing as well. Any Ideas on what this could be. There is no change in the overall performance of the car it almost seems like there is a loose piece of metal under the car tapping on the exhaust.

It sounds like it's coming from under the engine on the passenger side of the car. I thought it almost sounded like the heat sheild is coming loose?

I would check if the shields are not loose or something stuck in between the shield and the exaust pipe itself. Very common here in New Zealand as the stone chips on the roads keep flying!!
Be careful of the heat off the pipe as you can easily burn yourself.
Ideally it would be a good idea to put the car on a pit or hoist...if not try to put the car on wooden blocks so that you can get easy access underneath. Good luck and keep me updated.

I had this same noise over the summer, I took it to the dealer and found that it was my heat shield, and there was a safety recall on this part. I would advise just to take it to the dealer and have them check the car for any recalls.
