The coil (nearest the battery) burned out and was replaced with a salvage part. After 50 miles it too burned out. Tried again, with plugs, and it happened one more time. What could be causing the same coil (there are two) to keep going bad?

Is the coil visually burned up, or does it just quit? If there is no physical damage, check the + voltage at both coils, with key on, and see if there is a difference. Please advise.

The first coil was actually burst. The next two simply have bulges on the side in line with the spark plug wire that comes in. We checked the voltage and it matches for both coils. The current coil, when the engine is cold, seems to work OK. We pulled the plug wire with the engine runing and it ran just as it does when the coil went out. I haven't run it to failure again hoping to resolve the issue and get by with the current coil.

Thanks!

With an ohmeter, check the resistance of the 2 plug wires on the bad coil. See if there is a drastic difference. You could also check the 2 on the good coil so you can get an average. Let me know.
