just because it's an interference engine doesn't mean damage has already happened. I found that depending on many circumstances that it a 50/50 chance.

I would change the timing belt and see if the will run.
it's a lot cheaper than replacing the engine. and if engine damage has happened you can always put the new belt the motor you are going to install.

Pull valve covers and check for any damage...easier than doing the belt..if visible damage has occured it should have bent a few valves, or broken a few guides...if you were driving, it's probably going to have visible damage...

Actually, the timing belt is ok it was the idle pulley bolt that broke, the pulley came off and the timing belt then jumped off the other pulleys. Because the timing belt came off, is the engine damaged?

it is definately the timing belt. The covers were removed and that's when we discovered the p;ulley laying insidethe cover. It appears as though the bolt holding that pulley broke. Ironically, Mitubishi replaced the two pulleyss, timingbelt, and serpentine belt about 20,000 mile ago. Less than 2 years. What should I do?

I would call them and see if the work is gauranted, then tell them what happened. it could be an over or undertightened bolt that broke. Any teeth missing from the belt?
