1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse timing belt tensioner

I had a broken timing belt replaced, along with valve repair, then two days later the timing belt jumped again because the bolt holding the tensioner broke. My local mechanic said it looked like the tensioner was pushed too far forward, but the mechanic who did the work said that is impossible because it auto-adjusts. Who is correct? Where can I find that information in print?

Im not sure about on the 98 models but on the 92 plymouth laser (same car) I have to adjust it myself it is not a "self adjusting tensioner" like on the typical serpentine belts. Hope this helps.

If it was a single bolt that broke it has the mechanical tensioner not the hydraulic that self adjusts. Could be the spring was weak in the tensioner causing it to let the belt slap it and break the bolt.
