1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual

My 1998 Eclipse has the 420a non turbo Chrysler engine in it. All the service manuals and how-tos I find talk about the fuel filter being on the firewall and the fule pump being able to be accessed under the rear seat. This is not the case on my car. The access under the seat has no fuel lines going into it. Just a wiring harness for the float.

Crawling under the car reveals what appears to be the fuel pump and some other "canisters" under the tank near the frame. Where can I find information on this setup? Is it factory? If so what all is down there and what are the part numbers? Info on this setup seems to be quite lacking and I am wondering why.

What prompted me looking into all this is the car will start just fine, will rev up for the most part. However, going down the road the car will die within a minute or so. It won't start for at least a minute. During that time if I crank it over it will not start. It does not generate any error codes to a scanner and the check engine light does not come on.

You fuel pump is in the fuel tank, not mounted externally. If you don't have the rear seat access panel than you must drop the fuel tank to replace the pump. The filter should also be near the fuel tank, mounted in the fuel line.

I found the access to the pump. Was off to the side. I had tunnel vision trying to find the filter. Any manuals on how to change the filter? What else is by the filter? I noticed 1 or 2 additional "Canister" things up there. I am having a hard time finding repair manuals on this setup. All are for the models which have the filter on the firewall.

Not sure why you would have trouble finding the info. the 420a non turbo 2.0L is the weaker engine and more popular on these eclipses.. anyway, the fuel filter replacement steps and pic are below..hope it helps.

Properly relieve the fuel system pressure
If not already done, disconnect the negative battery cable.
If necessary, raise and safely support the vehicle
Wrap shop towels around the fitting that is being disconnected to absorb residual fuel in the lines.
Cover the hose connection with shop towels to prevent any splash of fuel that could be caused by residual pressure in the fuel pipe line. Hold the fuel filter nut securely with a backup wrench, then remove the eye bolt. Disconnect the high-pressure fuel line from the filter. Remove and discard the gaskets.
While holding the fuel filter nut securely with a back-up wrench, loosen the main pipe flare nut. Separate the flare nut connection from the filter. Remove and discard the gaskets.
Remove the eye bolt, gasket and connector.
Remove the pressure regulator.
Remove the mounting bolts and remove the fuel filter. If necessary, remove the fuel filter bracket.
