Im working on a 1997 eclipse 2.0 engine and my ? is. What would cause a loud pinging noise similar to a rod knock in the upper manifold section of the motor. I think it might be a bent valve. I also pulled the pan off and checked all the lower components they seem to be fine. Then i pulled the head off and i do not see any visual metal on metal . So is it possible that the damage is in between the rocker and valve stem beating togeather and thats why im not seeing any visual damage?

Hi jims2000honda,

If the noise comes and goes and sometimes disappears when the engine is revved, then it is caused by the hydraulic lifters.
