1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual

i cannot put my car into first gear. normally i park it and leave it in first gear and the only way i can be in first is to start it in first gear. any time i try to shift int ofirst a grinding noise happens. why is this?
