I own a 1996 Eclipse and the check engine light came on. The car's RPM sticks on 2000 and then begins to jump between 1500 and 2000. When driving the car surges. When stopped at a traffic light it is still reving fast.

The check engine light is on. So, before you do anything, go to your local Autozone and have them scan the computer. Write down all code numbers out of the scanner and post them here. Do not purchase any parts from them just yet. We'll diagnose the problem(s) first, then go buy your parts.
