Hi,
Since it didn't happen right away, I don't suspect the oil was overfilled. However, it's possible. Also, can you tell me what color the smoke was? For example, was it blue, black/gray, or white? Were there any strange odors from it? Were there any sounds such as ticking or knocking from the engine?
The color of the smoke can tell us a lot. For example, if the oil was blue in color, that is an indication of motor oil being burned.
Black/gray smoke oftentimes indicates a rich fuel mixture.
White smoke usually indicates that coolant is getting into the combustion chamber due to a faulty head gasket.
Since there are different possibilities, the first thing I would recommend checking is the oil level and condition. Make sure it isn't overfilled and is clean.
Next, confirm the coolant level isn't getting low, which could indicate a head gasket issue.
Last, here is a link that explains how to check for a bad head gasket. Take a look through it and inspect the items indicated.

If there were any odd sounds such as ticking or knocking from the engine, review this link to gain a better understanding of possible causes:

If you look at the picture below, it shows the oil type and capacity required for this vehicle.
I hope this helps. Let me know if you have other questions.
Take care,
Joe
