1998 Mercury Villager The back hatch won't open

My back hatch will not open. I can click and push and kick from inside and outside. the back door just won't open. the window part opens fine. Please advise.

It sounds like the linkage to the latch has broken or come unattached. Remove the rear door panel and check the linkage and let me know what you find.
