Shakes or Wobbles problem
1998 Mercury Villager 6 cyl Automatic 120000 miles

I am at a stop sign and when I accelerate to drive...if I start out real slow and let the van kick into the first gear..I won't have a jerking forward problem..however, upon normal acceleration...(like most people can do with their cars)...mine will jerk forward or pounce forward repeatedley and I think when I let up off the gas...it will subside. What could this be and will this cause serious damage to my van if not fixed?

It sounds like the engine is misfiring under a load. Has the check engine light come on and when was the last tune up?
