1997 Mercury Villager 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

My Villager won't start in the cold. It has been very cold in the mornings. In the afternoons it will start. But when I press the accelerator, it hesitates. Any ideas on what is wrong.

Start with checking the coolant temp sensor and throttle position sensor.
