1996 Mercury Villager inside panel of slider will not stay

Interior problem
1996 Mercury Villager

The inside panel on the slider keeps coming off. It prevents the slider from opening and closing. I've replaced the little clips but it doesn't help.

What can be done? I'm having to drive with the panel off -- looks bad! The interior is all leather.

To better assist you please tell me if your model is a GS, LS or Nautical. Also your engine size in liter and the 8th digit of your VIN.
