1994 Mercury Villager exhaust leak ,crossover pipe

is it possible to repair the crossover pipie with a patch welded over the leak

So long as the patch is made of material that is capable of doing the same job as the crossover pipe material then it should work, that is assuming the welding job is done cleanly and correctly. If a spot is missed when welding, then the leak will still be there escaping through the patch.
