I have a 1993 mercury villager van recently it began to run hot after longer rides on the freeway but when I turned on the heater the temp would drop.I tried to see if temp would go up further as it was one click past normal running temp. Then it started to get hotter more often. Now it is getting real hot.I have checked hoses and there are no leaks. The water pump seems to be fine as it would over heat in the driveway. The lower hose when I grabbed felt empty after I tried turning it on after letting it cool for awhile. The fan also seems to kick on so does this seem to be a thermostat problem or is there something else I should look at?

Change the thermostat and flush the cooling system for a start-

Check the water pump

One way to test for a bad water pump is to squeeze the upper radiator hose when the engine is hot and idling. Careful, because the hose will be HOT! If you do not feel much coolant circulating through the hose when you rev the engine, the pump may be bad. The other cause might be a bad thermostat that is not opening properly (remove and inspect the thermostat), or a clogged radiator.
