I am trying to change valve cover gasket and I got all the screws out except the one by the distributor. Do I have to take off the distributor. I am worried about it getting out of time and not starting. Can you help me.

Do not worry about removing the distributor.
Remove the distributor cap and note the position of the rotor.
Remove the bolt holding the distributor on and remove the distributor.
Do not turn over the engine with the distributor off.
As long as you reinstall the distributor with the rotor in the same location, then you will be back in business and remain in time.

However, if a mistake is made, and the engine is turned over prior to installing the distributor, then you need to line up the camshaft pulley to 15 degrees before Top Dead Center (BTDC) and then ensure that the rotor is pointing to the # 1 cylinder (back of the engine, far left side)
