1997 Mercury Tracer Water pump again?

I took my car in for routine maintenance and they said my water pump has a slight leak and it should be replaced before problems arrise. I just replaced the thing in 2005. How long do they last? Is it common for them to fall apart so quickly?

its not a common thing but its not unheard of
