1997 Mercury Tracer Heater Fan

The last few weeks my heater fan would cut out for a second and then kick back in. It did this maybe three times and today it cut out and never kicked back in. Changing the dials on the heater made no difference. Where do I start to find out what went wrong and how to fix it?

Direct power to the blower motor-if it works -test the blower motor resistor-
