1997 Mercury Tracer brake light on dashboard

Brakes problem
1997 Mercury Tracer 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

The brake light stays on even when the car has warmed up and I played with the emergency brake, up and down because it is not used. I live is a flat area so there is never a need to put the emergency brake on.
