1993 Mercury Tracer Wrong jumpstart

The battery was drained and we jumpsart it wrongly and there was smoke that came out from I dont even know where. Is there a chance that there will be some damage in the electrical system? Is replacing the battery one of the approach to the problem? The car wont start.
How will I fix it?

Is it cranking over and will not start or just won't crank at all/nothing when turning key to cranking position??
