My 91 tracer has a headlight problem. When I have the headlights on and use my left turn signal the headlights turn off until I turn the signal off. It doesn't do it when I turn right and doesn't do it when I have my running lights going.

I can hold the signal light down to the point of clicking into place and it works but as soon as it gets past a certain point it turns the headlights off.

I've replaced the relay but still nothing.

I would start with checking all the turn signal light bulbs and sockets...sounds like a corrsion probelm to me...or possibly the headlight switch itself.

Lovely,
I'll clean them up and hopefully that'll be that.

Thanks

Suggested Repair

Inspect and clean all turn signal bulbs and sockets for corrosion. If the problem continues, check or replace the headlight switch. The relay has already been replaced.

Conversation Summary

A 1991 Mercury Tracer owner reported that the headlights turn off when the left turn signal is used with the headlights on, but not with the right signal or with the running lights. The problem starts once the signal stalk moves past a certain point, and replacing the relay did not help. The expert suggested checking all turn signal bulbs and sockets for corrosion and also considering the headlight switch. The owner planned to clean the bulbs and sockets.
