my 1987 mercury topaz with 150 000 km the car is somewhat reving to high but when the car reaches forty k and must change into second gear it jerks into the gear it does the same thing slowing down into second gear my thought was the transmission fluid but any input would be much appreciated

Hey talis,
Definitely make sure the fluid is right up there! Also I'm pretty sure there is a mechanical linkage from the throttle to the trans. This is your "kick down", ensure that its free and you can move it by hand. If its binding, spay the pivots with penetrant and work it by hand until it moves freely. Let us know!
