What do you have 1.9 2.3 or 2.5

Is it Carb/MPFI/CFI?????????????

Did you aligned the Cam/Crank sprockets as illustrated in the book and piston no.1 on its compression stroke. Inspect/verify.

Could be very well be in the exhaust stroke or its way out of time.

1.9L

Ignition Timing 10BTDC Curb 750rpm
To adjust timing disconnect 2-wire connector at ICM then install jumper wire to yellow and black wire-now go aim the gun.

BTW all this data should be underneath the hood lable VECI and its instructions to follow.
