1996 Sable sedan; The other night I started my car and the door open light was lit and the interior lights were still on, so I went and checked all the doors and trunk and everything was closed, so drove to my destination, and when I shut the car off th lights stayed on. What could be causing this? Then I disconected the battery so it wouldn't drain it and when I reconnecte it the lights came back on but this time when I started the car the door ajar light wasn't lit.

It sounds like your door jamb switch. When the light stays on go to each door and push the switch in to see if it sticks or if the light go's off.

I had the same problem for six months. Someone told me to spray each door with silicone and it worked for the door ajar light but the dome light was still on. I took my car to a dealer and they discovered I had turned the dome light switch on thinking I turned it off and had the door open while doing so. DUH!

Good evening Slim 2193,

The switch in the left front door latch is comm for this issue. It is part of the latch assembly at the back of the door. I attached a picture for you of the location and the procedure for removing the door panel for access.

Otherwise, it could be the light control module under the dash. It is also called the GEM module.

Roy

1. Remove cover behind inside door handle.
2. Remove plug button from bottom of pull cup.
3. Remove screw retaining front door trim panel.
4. Remove sail speaker grill, if equipped.
5. Starting at bottom of trim panel, carefully remove door panel by pulling away from door.

NOTE: Do not attempt to remove more than one pushpin at a time.

6. Disconnect electrical connectors as necessary.
7. Replace all removed pushpins with new pushpins.
8. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten door panel retaining screw to 1.4-2.0 N-m (12-18 lb-in).

The Generic Electronic Module (GEM) is connected to the rear of the fuse junction panel.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove two nuts retaining fuse junction panel to dash panel.
3. Pull upper ears of fuse junction panel down out of retaining bracket.
4. Disengage locking tangs and disconnect three harness connectors from bottom of Generic Electronic Module (GEM).
5. Turn fuse junction panel over and remove screw retaining Generic Electronic Module (GEM) to fuse junction panel.
6. Disconnect and remove Generic Electronic Module (GEM) from fuse junction panel.

INSTALLATION
1. To install, reverse Removal procedure.
2. Tighten Generic Electronic Module (GEM) retaining screw to 1-2 Nm (9-18 lb-in). Tighten retaining nuts to 4-6 Nm (35-53 lb-in).
