2002 Mercury Sable Do I NEED an ac compressor?

2002 Mercury Sable 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

My ac compressor has locked up, and the maintenance man has informed me that I need a new compressor, drive belt, and bearings. Do I absolutely need the air compressor? or can I take it out and still have a driveable car? I don't need the air conditioner, I just need a car.

If its locked-up you need one or remove the compressor and get the belt w/o AC
