2001 Mercury Sable sputtering sable isn't able

My recently divorced sis in law has 2001 merc sable it has been sputtering struggling to get up hills and near stalling. Also emission light flashes when it sputters

Hi:
If the light is on, take it to a nationally recognized parts store and have them scan it for trouble codes. Most stores will do it for free.
