2001 Mercury Sable Lighting system

Electrical problem
2001 Mercury Sable 6 cyl Automatic 213000 miles

Whenever I turn my turnsignals on, they flash once or twice then go out and they make my brake lights go out as well. I have checked fuses and lights to see if any were blown and they are good. What else could be wrong?
